Did You Know There Are Acupuncture Points For Fertility?

Updated: Apr 2, 2022

We all know the benefits of acupuncture, like stress relief and the easing of pain. But did you know that there are acupuncture points for fertility? That’s right, people have had fertility issues for as long as humans have been making other humans. So it makes a tremendous amount of sense that one of the most ancient forms of healthcare can aid with fertility. But how does it work? And what’s the best way to implement it? There are a few different explanations as to why and we’ll go through the results with you below!

Does It Really Work?

In short, yes! Studies have shown that adding acupuncture to traditional In Vitro Fertilization treatments substantially increased pregnancy success. In a study of 160 women, one group of 80 patients received two 25-minute acupuncture treatments. The second group of 80, who also underwent embryo transfer, received no acupuncture treatments.

More of the women who received acupuncture got pregnant than their un-pinned counterparts. And it wasn’t an insignificant amount either, 34 pregnancies for the acupuncture group and 21 for the other.

Western Medical Explanation

Okay, but why? Well, the Western medical explanation is… they don’t really know. One theory for Western practitioners is that acupuncture changes the blood supply to the ovaries. This possibly causes a dilation of the arteries and increases blood flow. This increased blood flow may cause the ovaries to receive more significant hormonal stimulation. This high blood flow may also help the lining of the uterine wall by allowing it to absorb the nutrients and hormones necessary to help it grow strong enough to hold onto an implanted embryo.

TCM Explanation

Traditional Chinese Medicine can shed a bit of light, however. According to TCM, acupuncture restores and moves your body’s energy, Qi. By placing needles at key energy meridians, an acupuncturist can shift the flow of Qi from somewhere where energy is abundant to a place where it’s deficient. So, if the pins are placed at meridians linked to reproductive organs, their flow of Qi will increase and ultimately become more active. To get your fertility Qi up, most experts say you will need about two 30 minute treatments a week, sometimes for several months, before the effects can be seen.

Whichever explanation you prefer, it’s clear that there are acupuncture points for fertility. Not only that, acupuncture can be used in conjunction with more traditional western practices.
